If you are not sure if you want to commit to formal lessons, schedule a short charter and see how you like it.  If you would like to experience yacht racing, we can arrange that too.

ASA recently selected Bill Sutherland, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan as one of the Outstanding Instructors of the Year for 2020. This award honors the top 1% percent of ASA Instructors as determined by Surveys that are submitted by their students.

Learn to Sail

While many sailing programs in the area focus on racing, most of our clients are primarily interested in cruising. Some have gone on to achieve certifications for bare-boat chartering in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Others have purchased large sailboats of their own for cruising with family and friends.

Why Sail With Us?

  • Halcyon Sailing is the only ASA sailing school in the midwest where the instuctor was recently selected as one of ASA's Instructor of the year.
  • Due to our location, it's five minutes from the slip until the sails are up on Lake St Clair. Spend less time motoring and more time sailing.
  • Our classes are very small which allows more tiller-time for each student. It works best with two students per class. Frequently we schedule a class with only one student; a totally private class. It is very rare for three students to be in a class unless it is a family or a group of friends.
  • We use newer model boats that are kept in fantastic condition. Liberty can be used by alumni to reinforce their skills after certification
  • Our prices are All Inclusive. We don't charge extra for books, shipping, ASA membership, or certification like most other schools do.
  • We have a close working relationship with the preeminent sailboat broker in the Great Lakes area. If you are searching for a boat, let us help provide expert advice.
